I have already downloaded, installed, and set Google Chrome as my default web browser. Even though it is still in beta and there will definitely be bugs to be fixed, I am extremely excited about Google Chrome.

Why?

It’s not just because Chrome has been tested to be 42x faster than IE7 and 9x faster than FF3, it’s because I believe that Google Chrome is the first functional web applications platform. With Chrome, web developers will be emboldened to challenge the boundaries of web applications development, now that they are secure in the knowledge that their programs will have a powerful platform on which to be executed and run.

At the heart of Chrome is the V8 Javascript engine, that incorporates features such as hidden class transitions, dynamic code generation, and precise garbage collection. The V8 virtual machine processes Javascript faster than IE and FF by orders of magnitude, and creates a powerful platform for complex javascript applications to be run in a browser.

Hence, thinking of Chrome as a web browser really doesn’t do justice to it. Just like the iPhone is the first functional mobile computer that provides voice functionality as an aside, so Chrome is the first webapp platform that provides web browsing functionality as an aside.

And so for this reason, i disagree with analysts who make claims such as “Google Chrome will capture 15-20% of the browser market in 2 years.” Such statements misunderstand what Chrome is about. Chrome wasn’t designed to ‘capture browser market share.’ Chrome was designed to be the pioneer and create the webapp platform market. What Chrome will do, is that it will capture 90% (or the vast majority) of the webapp platform market from its inception.

Chrome is a fundamental paradigm shift, and a development that takes cloud computing one step closer to an ubiquitous reality, and I can’t wait to see what exciting webapps get developed in the months ahead, that take full advantage of the Chrome platform.

  1. I fully agree with your opinion about the market share. I think Chrome is the ultimate browser for computer nerds. They seem to focus the attention on technical aspects, as depicted in the comic presentation, so it’s a bit hard for me to believe that Google has an early plan to directly get a big chunk of the market.

Anyway, the comic book presents so nicely the cool features, that you feel a sudden urge to install it and afterwards it can become addictive. That’s what I did. :)
